Proto-Samic
Etymology
Unknown. Has been compared with Tundra Nenets (sormūŋk), Forest Nenets (xirmuŋk), but in the absense of any other known Uralic cognates, the irregular vowel correspondence between the Nenets forms, and the competing common Samoyedic term тыра (tira) (from *tïrå), a relationship is unlikely. The word shows several points of similarity with *suormë (“finger”), but no derivational relationship is identifiable.
