Proto-Samic
Etymology
According to Sammallahti (apud Aikio 2006), from Pre-Samic *awta, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *auþijaz.
An alternate etymology has been suggested as well: connection to Hungarian vad (“wild”), Khanty *woont "forest" (e.g. Eastern Khanty вӫнт (wø̈nt)). UEW proposes a common Proto-Finno-Ugric *wamta. However, the development *mt > *vt would be irregular in Samic: contrast e.g. *vuomtētēk.
