Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/bľukati

This Proto-Slavic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Probably from *bľuti (“to vomit”) +‎ *-kati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlewH- (“to overflow, to gush”). The Serbo-Croation and Ukrainian forms may reflect an ancient telic s-extension or may be of expressive origin. Akin to Ancient Greek φλύω (phlúō, “to boil over”), Latin fluō (“flow”).

Trubachev proposes instead origin from an earlier **bjukati, which is incompatible with the iterative form *blyjati > dial. Bulgarian блия (blija), Serbo-Croatian бли́јати.
