Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Probably from *bľuti (“to vomit”) + *-kati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlewH- (“to overflow, to gush”). The Serbo-Croation and Ukrainian forms may reflect an ancient telic s-extension or may be of expressive origin. Akin to Ancient Greek φλύω (phlúō, “to boil over”), Latin fluō (“flow”).
Trubachev proposes instead origin from an earlier **bjukati, which is incompatible with the iterative form *blyjati > dial. Bulgarian блия (blija), Serbo-Croatian бли́јати.
