Cognate with Proto-Germanic *hwītaz (white) or Lithuanian svidùs (glaring) (akin to Lithuanian svidė́ti (to be bright), svìsti (to glare), dial. svýsti), Old Prussian sidis (dogwood) depending on the exact etymology. Further akin to Latvian svîst (to glance, to glare).
