Uncertain, possibly ultimately connected with Proto-Germanic *lūs, Pokorny deriving both from Proto-Indo-European *lewH- (louse).

Possibly related to Baltic *ut-, cf. Lithuanian utėlė̃, uti̇̀s, Latvian uts. Compare also Lithuanian vievesà. The forms may have been distorted because of linguistic taboos.
