Proto-West Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *bud- (“round, rounded”) + *-il, the former apparently a d-extension of a Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (“to inflate, swell”) (which may be equivalent to *bʰuH- (“to be, grow”)), with many supposed descendants in various branches, albeit with poorly-resolved morphology. Compare Proto-Germanic *būlǭ (“swelling, boil”).[1]
