From Proto-Germanic *bud- (round, rounded) +‎ *-il, the former apparently a d-extension of a Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (to inflate, swell) (which may be equivalent to *bʰuH- (to be, grow)), with many supposed descendants in various branches, albeit with poorly-resolved morphology. Compare Proto-Germanic *būlǭ (swelling, boil).[1]
