From *w̥aq- / *pʰʷa- (bird prefix) + *kʰʲaj. Chug-Lish reflexes the former and Mey-Sartang reflexes the latter.
The second element is cognate with Dikhyang Bugun kʰe (“chicken”), and probably Chinese 雞 (MC kej).
