Etymology

From Proto-Edekiri *ì-dérègbè, *è-dérègbè, *è-kérègbè, compare with Itsekiri ekerégbè. Likely used simutaneously with *ɛ-wʊ́rɛ́, but with a less extensive origin, *ì-dérègbè is a Proto-Edekiri innovation. Its only cognate outside of Yoruboid is Edo òdégbè, but its lack of cognates in Edoid may suggest a borrowing from Edekiri to Edo. /k/ to /d/, which is seen in descendants of this term, is somewhat common in Yoruboid.
