From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-[1]. Cognate with Dacian *zalmo, Lithuanian želmuõ, želmeñs (“plant, sprout”), and Latvian zel̂me (“vigorous, opulent growth”)[2]. Compare with the Latvian hydronym Zelmin and the Lithuanian toponyms Želmenų káimas, Želmeniškių káimas, and Žalmiškių káimas.
