German
Etymology
From Old Dutch Reithe, of uncertain origin. Possibly a variant of rēda (also attested with th and dh and underlying in several placenames), from Proto-West Germanic *raidu (whence English road). Another possibility would be relation with roden (“to make arable”), but Old High German riutī (as in Bayreuth etc.) cannot be the source and a fitting cognate does not seem to exist (the local equivalent being -rath).
Pronunciation
Proper noun
Rheydt n (proper noun, genitive Rheydts or (optionally with an article) Rheydt)
- A former town, now a quarter of Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
