Etymology
First attested in 1331. Possibly from sata(“hundred”) + kunta(“municipality, commune”), probably as an indirect calque of Old Swedishhundari; compare Englishhundred, referring to both the number and a kind of an administrative division. It has sometimes been proposed that the latter component kunta may derive from the same root (Proto-Germanic*hundą) as well, either only in Satakunta or as a whole (the latter is unlikely, however).
Another theory, proposed by Nuutinen (1989), is that the first element sata- is a Germanic loanword meaning "landing place, shore", from which also satama is derived.
