First attested as Gaesberg in the 16th century. Compound of an unclear first element and berg (“hill, elevated place”). The first element has been interpreted as a derivation of dialectal scheizen (“to get stones”) or (incorrectly) as related to De Scheijdt, a nearby (former) hamlet. The toponym has also been linked to the Schaesberg family of Aachen. Formerly an independent village.
