First attested as Gaesberg in the 16th century. Compound of an unclear first element and berg (hill, elevated place). The first element has been interpreted as a derivation of dialectal scheizen (to get stones) or (incorrectly) as related to De Scheijdt, a nearby (former) hamlet. The toponym has also been linked to the Schaesberg family of Aachen. Formerly an independent village.
