Unknown.
According to one theory, through its variant Scharmotte from an Italian adaptation of Scharm or Schärm, an East Central German dialectal form of Scherben "shards; earthenware pot", supposed to have been coined by Italian workers in the porcelain industry of 18th century Thuringia.
