In North Germany Schiller might stem from Middle Low German schilder (“painter, signboard painter”).[1]
Schiller m or f (proper noun, surname, masculine genitive Schillers or (with an article) Schiller, feminine genitive Schiller, plural Schillers or Schiller)
Inherited from Central Franconian Scheller, from Middle High German schulter, from Old High German scultera, from Proto-West Germanic *skuldru.[1]
Cognate with German Schulter and Luxembourgish Schëller.
