First attested as Schoonoord in 1858. Compound of schoon (“clean”) and oord (“place”). The name was chosen by entrepreneur Jasper Klijn in order to lure settlers to the village. Compare Bonrepas, Kockengen, Koekange, Schoonebeek and Wijngaarden.
