From Middle High German Sephteme, probably from Latin septima (“seventh”) in a supposed ad septimam leugam (“at the seventh league”), the place being roughly seven Roman leagues away from Bonn. The sound shift pt → ft through Primärberührung, the further shift ft → cht through the northwestern, especially Dutch, development, which is amply attested in the Rhineland (cf. Luxembourgish Griecht, Luucht, uechter).
