Literally “slaughtering”, referring to when livestock is slaughtered for winter, from Middle Welsh tachwet; the principal semantic component ("wedd") is from Proto-Celtic *wedeti (“to lead”) (with semantic shift "lead" > "push" > "hit, beat"), and is also seen in argywedd (“harm, damage, injury”).
