Asatrian derives it from Iranian *han-gauza- (check this).--Calak (talk) 20:21, 11 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
- That is an old idea, predating Asatrian. I am not sure the Iranian prefix *ham- explains Armenian ըն- (ən-). The reflex of the latter is Old Armenian համ- (ham-). A better fit may be Iranian *ni-, as in Georgian, with metathesis. --Vahag (talk) 09:38, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
- Consider also Old Arm. andam from same Iranian prefix *ham... .--Calak (talk) 09:43, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
- That could explain անկոյզ (ankoyz), but ընկոյզ (ənkoyz) points to *inkōz, *enkōz. --Vahag (talk) 11:10, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Vahagn Petrosyan, Fenakhay: (following Talk:لوز): Leslau, Wolf (1991) “ገውዝ”, in Comparative Dictionary of Geʿez (Classical Ethiopic), 2nd edition, Wiesbaden: Otto Harrassowitz, →ISBN, page 207b refers “for the Hittite origin of this root” to Rabin, Chaim (1965) “Millīm ḥittiyōṯ bəʿiḇrīṯ”, in Sefer Segal (in Hebrew), Jerusalem: Kiryat Sefer, page 151 of 151–179. I have the same problem at كَرْكَنْد (karkand) where I would have an etymology prepared for you/the Old Armenian. If someone of us learns the Zionist language this could become useful in ten years. With Rabin, Chaim (1963) “Hittite Words in Hebrew”, in Orientalia, volume 32, number 2, →DOI, pages 113–139 we only got half the story. Fay Freak (talk) 11:55, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
