לְמַעַן (l'má'an)

I've been thinking about this one for a while, and I really think it must be inflected the same as, say, לְנַעַל־ (l'ná'ál-, to ...’s shoe); that is, like this:

Inflection table
Base form לְמַעַן (l'má'an)
Personal-pronoun-
including forms
singular plural
m f m f
1st person לְמַעֲנִי (l'ma'aní) לְמַעֲנֵנוּ (l'ma'anénu)
2nd person לְמַעַנְךָ (l'ma'an'khá) לְמַעֲנֵךְ (l'ma'anékh) לְמַעַנְכֶם (l'ma'an'khém) לְמַעַנְכֶן (l'ma'an'khén)
3rd person לְמַעֲנוֹ (l'ma'anó) לְמַעֲנָהּ (l'ma'anáh) לְמַעֲנָם (l'ma'anám) לְמַעֲנָן (l'ma'anán)

The áyin takes a khatáf-patákh (עֲ) in the forms where the nún has a vowel, and a full patákh (עַ) in the forms where the nún is final or has a sh'va.

For each form where you did provide nikúd, the above is consistent with that; and for each form where you did not, the above khatáf-patákh version is many times more popular on Google than a version with full patákh.

Done Done. I just wanted to check with you first, since you clearly put a lot of effort into finding sources, whereas I'm just saying "I really think it must be". —RuakhTALK 19:26, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
