Usage in the current Russian war of aggression

Have seen the usage, in both Ukrainian use and also English (direct and in translation) of "cossack" as a term applied specifically to a subset of military people who are freedom-loving and free people, ie., those who are choosing to fight for such principles and values. Thus, would not apply to all military of any army or large military force. Tends to refer to the international legion (foreign fighters in Ukraine) and the Ukrainians who voluntarily (eg, returned from jobs in Europe to fight in the war), but definitely not just people who reside in any particular geography or side of the war, and not to military draftees/conscripts. Have seen it a lot in primary source usage. I'll keep my eyes open for particular secondary source citations that would support this particular sense of the word. Cheers.
