Adverb?

Seems like an adverb to me. "He stood akimbo" sounds right, "He is akimbo" sounds wrong. Hippietrail 01:45, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Dictionary.com shows both. The 1913 Webster's and Wordnet shows adjective.

Here's a web page that shows something of an etymology for the word. I don't know how authoritative it is, though. Ortonmc 17:14, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

The AHD agrees with that, and so does m-w.com. Seems respectable enough. —Muke Tever 02:35, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia article w:Akimbo says that there is no agreed-upon etymology and deals with several suggestions. This page implies the Norse definition is accepted. Both cannot be right so either this page or the en.wp page need changing. Thryduulf 22:09, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
