etymology skepticism-how about Jew instead of jocus

call me a folk etymologist if you like,(I also study bugs casually(folk entomology)) but jocus means jest according to the current 10/24/06 etymology, and I don't see a jewel being a jest in any direct way, although farfetched things do happen with words, I admit. I have heard jewellers have frequently been Jewish because of not being allowed in other professions. I would like to hear what others think about this. ThanksRichard L. I am too sceptical about the etymology, though my guess would be a link to the Arabic word (jawhar) with r/l confusion commonly occurring in Romance languages (cf. azur/azul "blue", Sur/Sul "south"). A source for the etymology would also be a good thing. 134.96.90.27 16:14, 18 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
