Im going to be my usual self here and say that the 2018 Greenwood article that supposedly debunks the mentioned etymologies is no more than a reasonable guess, that nobody can really do more than guess, and that these biologists are a bit out of their field. The Greenwood article is not open-access, but I suspect we're not missing much. One Language Log poster says that if the Greenwoods are debunking the GIS and just is etymologies that they must have come up with an etymology of their own, but if that were the case I'd think we'd have heard about it one way or another.
