Rfv-sense 7: "(intransitive) The act of criticizing or labeling another person or thing." What's meant by it at all? If a noun, is it real in this sense (not "judgement")? If a verb ("To criticise &c."), isn't it transitive? --Duncan 16:41, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
- Not necessarily transitive. "You know nothing about it, so you shouldn't judge." I think it's about the same as sense 2. Equinox 11:42, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I reworded the definition like this. Do I take it right no noun sense was lost? (I checked the translations and they are all for verbs, so that at least should be all right). --Duncan 21:25, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Used to mean ‘if we are to judge by’, judging by/from are now used at the head of a subordinate clause loosely connected to a preceding or following main clause --Backinstadiums (talk) 09:54, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Usage note: vs justice
According to Garner, as a general rule in AmE, Trial judges and appellate judges on intermediate levels are generally judges, but judges on the highest appellate level of a jurisdiction are justices. Cf. Chief Justice of the United States. JMGN (talk) 16:33, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
