Does anyone know the derivation of the Irish expression "Locked" as in very drunk (195.7.44.245 16:10, 23 December 2010 (UTC))Reply

I have added it, although the authority on Hiberno-English, Terence Dolan, doesn't seem to know its origin. He does include it in his dictionary however and as a Dubliner I can affirm its a common expression here. http://books.google.ie/books?id=RN0p1uienWMC&lpg=PA142&dq=locked%20drunk%20hiberno-english&pg=PA142#v=onepage&q&f=false. My guess is that like many of these words it was originally a Gaelic word for drunk (ólta maybe?) which has been given an Anglicised spelling that approximates to an existing word. 176.61.18.245 18:40, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
