- That theory should be mentioned, yes — or more precisely, the mention of it should be moved. It's already in meerkat#Dutch. As that Dutch entry notes, however, it's a problematic theory, given how early the term is attested in Germanic.
Sprache und Evolution: Grundlagen der Evolution und Ansätze (1990) offers a combination of the two theories, saying Germanic sailors interpreted the Indian word as "Meer-Katze".
