"arbitrary" in "An arbitrary word or phrase" was not redundant, though there is probably a better way to express the point.
A key property of names is that they need not carry intrinsic meanng. A miller might be named Miller, but might also be named "Smith".
The first quotation was meant to illustrate this, but may actually undermine it.

- I would say "publicly implicate" already covers this, or close enough. Equinox ◑ 16:52, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Idiomatic enough? e.g. Billy for William or Peggy for Margaret. JMGN (talk) 02:20, 11 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @JMGN: I would shore it up with an example of something like 'Johnny' being being described as the 'short name' for 'John', though 'Billy' for 'William' might do. The main risk then is thaty it might be argued that this covered (or rather should be) in the meanings of short, namely current number 4, "Of a word or phrase, constituting an abbreviation (for another) or shortened form (of another)". --RichardW57 (talk) 12:57, 11 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
