My previous edit summary contains a typo: "merges" instead of "merged". Glades12 (talk) 17:47, 24 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
News ‘ tidings’ since the early 19c. has normally been treated as a singular.
It was only in the 19th century that the singular became the exclusively standard usage.
What meaning of singular are these authors using? --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:23, 9 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
- The first one gives the example "News is what a chap who doesn't care much about anything wants to read", i.e "news is" (singular), not "news are" (plural). However, I'd say it is uncountable: the chap wants to read some news, not a news. Equinox ◑ 20:03, 9 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
