pwn

I cut the following from the "Noun" section:

  1. An instance used in online gaming, pawn can mean "to render one's opponent as your pawn." Pronnunciation remains the same. This variant of the word "pawn" most often appears in the RTS genre of gaming. It can also be used to define an instance of being pawned, which is "Pawnation."

It seems to be describing the verb to pwn, so I just added a verb sense pointing to "pwn" instead. If I missed an important difference between pawn and pwn, let me know. Rod (A. Smith) 01:06, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pawn is actually different than "pwn." Pwn is synonomous to "own" or to own one's opponent. Pawn is still spelled p-a-w-n, and has the meaning stated above.

OK. Thanks. I've made the second verb sense reflect that meaning. Rod (A. Smith) 01:13, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Even if there is a difference in their meaning, the similarity is striking. E.g. when a hacker pwns a website, he gains control over it, thus rendering it his pawn. I'd say the etymology of 'pwn' should at least mention 'pawn' as a possible origin. (A side note: pronunciation 'does' look different.) --Providus 14:14, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
