The link word in this etymological path is Anglo-Latin PETA, that suggests a pre-Germanic origin; but there is no satisfactory evidence for the assumption that its origin is in Celtic PETH (part), or that it was borrowed. Its Celtic or Pictish origin is fairly certain, but the evidences are not obvious.
