etymologies 1 and 2
I would argue that 95% of people, even those with a background in linguistics, would not know without having first looked it up that definitions 1 ("stage prop") and 2 ("physical support item") have distinct etymologies, and since both have been in use with essentially their modern senses for 500 years, I dont think it's possible to specify which of the two was the source of the rugby sense. For all practical purposes they are the same word. Further evidence perhaps comes from that nobody uses the unadorned prop to mean "property" now, except perhaps in compounds like boolprop that are used only within a narrow social group. —Soap— 11:21, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
