Interesting... stricken says it's the past participle of strike, but this page makes no mention of the word. - dcljr 07:41, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The third meaning of this word in English is a transitive verb, but strike in the sample sentence is an intransitive verb, why?
Ch1908 has these. I suspect most are sums of parts really:
- strike a tent, to take it down (if anything, should be an extra sense at strike)
- strike for, to start suddenly for (also SoP? like strike out, start to make one's way?)
- strike from, to remove with a stroke (also SoP?)
- strike hands (Biblical), to become surety for anyone
- strike into, to enter upon suddenly, to break into
- strike out, to bring into light; to form by sudden effort

Is meaning 4.5 independent of meaning 6.3 or did it develop from meaning 6.3? The only quotation we have is only from after meaning 6.3 developed, so it is possible that the author was simply mistaken about the common definition of the term. If so, then meaning 4.5 is an extension of meaning 6.3, so it might be wrong to include it under meaning 4. 157.181.128.176 07:30, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
- I have moved 4.5 to 6.4. 157.181.128.179 10:13, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
