Wait a minute. @User:Equinox, what about "Oh, he's got a lot the matter with him." "the matter" modifies "a lot" which is being used as a noun in this case. You couldn't replace "he's got a lot the matter with him" with "he's got a lot a serious issue with him." Hmmm... What a confusing case. PseudoSkull (talk) 15:10, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd consider that ellipsis for "he's got a lot that's the matter...". Equinox 15:12, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Good point, that's it from me, please someone speedy this by author's request. PseudoSkull (talk) 15:14, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
How do we cover a phrase like "what's the matter?" Is it at matter? Renard Migrant (talk) 16:25, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that example is there. Equinox 16:27, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
matter is normally uncountable anyway. No need for an entry. DonnanZ (talk) 10:13, 10 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

What's the matter with him?; Nothing's the matter.

The examples for the first sense seem to be in fact uses of the second sense --Backinstadiums (talk) 17:22, 3 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Backinstadiums: I almost agree with you about "Nothing's the matter", but not about "What's the matter with him?", which is syntactically straightforward. Canonicalization (talk) 13:08, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
