I was under the impression that the etymology of widower was widow + wer (Middle English word for a male person), that is, the masculine equivalent of a widow, instead of widow + -er (suffix used to form an agent noun). A widower isn't a person who creates widows, in the similar sense that a murderer is a person who creates murders.
