From Old Galician-Portuguese Tejo, from Latin Tagus.[1] The change from /ɡ/ to /ʒ/ was an influence of Arabic /d͡ʒ/, while the change from /a/ to /e/ corresponded to a process of imala, absent in Spanish.[2]
