This template is used in the glyph origin section, similar to {{compound}}, but specifically for Hanzi compound. Use

{{Han compound|first component|second component|optional parameters}}

For instance, a simple etymology of 幕 could be created with:

{{Han compound|莫|巾}}

Which evaluates to:

莫 + 巾

As elsewhere, etymologies should be referenced.

For liushu character classification, the parameter |ls= with ic (ideogrammic compound) or psc (phono-semantic compound) can be added:

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *maːɡ): 莫 + 巾

A phono-semantic compound is made up of two components: a phonetic and a semantic one. They can be marked by using the parameters |c1= and |c2= with p or s:

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *maːɡ): phonetic 莫 (OC *maːɡ) + semantic 巾

Furthermore, there is the possibility to give translations of the components by using the parameters |t1= and |t2=:

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *maːɡ): 莫 + 巾 (“textiles”)

Alternative forms can be given by using the parameters |alt1= and |alt2=, take 慕 for example:

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *maːɡs): 莫 + 㣺 (“heart”)

For characters of non-Chinese origin, a language code should be specified with |lang=.

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, phở): semantic 米 (“rice”) + phonetic 頗 (phở)

|adj=

If specified, the adjectival form of the liushu name will be used, i.e. “pictographic” instead of “pictogram”.

|nocap=

If specified, the first letter will be lowercase.

|abbx=

If specified, the xth component will be labeled as "abbreviated".

|tr= (for the compound) and |trx= (for the xth component)

Transliteration for the corresponding character (replaces the automatic Old Chinese pronunciation if present).

|no_och= (for the compound) and |no_ochx= (for the xth component)

If specified, the automatic Old Chinese pronunciation for the corresponding character will be omitted (it's displayed by default for the compound and the phonetic component, if the character is a phono-semantic character).

• Shuowen Jiezi 說文解字 / 说文解字 (Shuōwén Jiězì) is a standard reference (early 2nd century CE), and is valuable (解字 = analyze/characters) but inaccurate at some points.
