Usage

This template may be used in the "References" and "Further reading" sections of Wiktionary entries and on talk pages to format references from Nathan Bailey's work An Universal Etymological English Dictionary (1st edition, 1721; 2nd edition, 1724; 3rd edition, 1726; and 7th edition, 1735). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 2nd, 3rd, or 7th edition, specify |edition=2nd, |edition=3rd, or |edition=7th. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1721).
  • |1=, |chapter=, or |entry= – the chapter (for example, |chapter=Introduction), or entry or headword, in the work to be quoted from. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry. By default, the template displays the entry in uppercase letters as this is how it usually appears in the work. To specify a different format (for example, in the case of verbs such as "To ABANDON"), use |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes; see the example below.
  • |2= or |page=mandatory in some cases: as the work is unpaginated, use this parameter to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/baileyuniversaletymdict1ed/page/n12/mode/1up, specify |page=12. This information must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of columns, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
