This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Ben Jonson's work Every Man out of His Humour (1st edition, 1600; and 1st folio version, 1616). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:
The template takes the following parameters:
|1=
or |page=
– mandatory: as the work is unpaginated, use this parameter to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive ("IA") to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/comicallsatyreof00jons_0/page/n2/mode/1up
, specify |page=2
. This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.|chapter=
– in most cases, if the IA page number is specified the template can determine the part of the work other than the main part quoted from, namely, "The Names of the Actors" (rather, the characters), the "Inductio", or the prologue. However, it is unable to do so if IA page 24 is specified, in which this case must be used to specify either |chapter=Inductio
or |chapter=Prologue
.|act=
– mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the IA page number is specified the template can determine the act number (I–V) quoted from. However, it is unable to do so if IA page 39, 67, 89, or 114 is specified, in which case this parameter must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I
.Act I IA pages 27–39 |
Act II IA pages 39–67 |
Act III IA pages 67–89 |
Act IV IA pages 89–114 |
Act V IA pages 114–142 |
|scene=
– mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the IA page number is specified the template can determine the scene number quoted from. However, if it is unable to do so, this parameter must be used to specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, like this: |scene=i
.
- In Act II, scene ii is either incorrectly indicated as "scena tertia" (scene iii), or has not been properly indicated between scenes i and iii; if required, specify it as
|scene=ii
.- In Act V, an alternative ending is printed on IA pages 140–142.
|sig=
or |signature=
, and |verso=
– |sig=
or |signature=
can be used to specify the signature number quoted from, which is indicated at the bottom centre of some pages. If quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1
or |verso=yes
; if |verso=
is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted.
[
and ]
For example, if the previous signature number is A iij and the next one is B, specify the missing signature number as |sig=[A iiij]
.|sig=
or |signature=
, and |verso=
, to specify the signature at the start of the range, and |sigend=
or |signatureend=
, and |versoend=
, (if required) to specify the signature at the end of the range.|2=
, |text=
, or |passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|part=
– the name of a part of the work other than the main part, such as the epistle dedicatory. If quoting from the dramatis personae, specify |part=Dramatis Personae
.|1=
or |act=
, and |2=
or |scene=
– mandatory: the act and scene numbers quoted from in uppercase and lowercase Roman numerals respectively, like this: |act=I
, |scene=i
.|3=
or |page=
, or |pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
|pages=81–82
.|pageref=
to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).|4=
, |text=
, or |passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.|brackets=
– use |brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.{{RQ:Jonson Every Man out of His Humour|sig=[P iv]|verso=1|page=127|passage=ee (to requite their courteſie) oftentimes '''d'offeth''' off his ovvne Nature, and puts of theirs; as vvhen hee becomes as churliſh as a Hogge, or as drunke as a Sovv: {{...}}}}
