Template:RQ:Peele Old Wives Tale

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from George Peele's work The Old Wives' Tale (1st edition, 1595; and a 1908 republication of the 1st edition). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Internet Archive:

• 1st edition, 1595 (text has been cut off at the bottoms of some pages).
• 1908 republication of the 1st edition.

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition (1595)

• As the main part of the work is not divided into acts and scenes, and is also unpaginated:
  • use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the HathiTrust Digital Library to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044090273137&view=1up&seq=5, specify |page=5.
  • In addition, |1= or |line=, or |lines= may be used to specify the line number(s) quoted from, from the 1908 republication of the work. If quoting a range of numbers, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |lines=10–11.

1908 republication

• |year= – mandatory: if quoting from the 1908 republication, specify |year=1908. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1595).
• If quoting from the untitled preface:
  • Specify |chapter=Preface.
  • Use |2= or |page=, or |pages= to specify the page number(s) quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=v–vi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

  This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• If quoting from the main part of the work:
  • As the main part is not divided into acts and scenes, but has line numbers, use |1= or |line=, or |lines= to specify the line number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of numbers, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |lines=10–11.
  • As the main part is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/oldwivestale00peel/page/n24/mode/1up, specify |page=24.

Both versions

• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
