RFD discussion: December 2022–January 2023

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (]).

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

{{mid2}}, {{mid3}}, {{mid4}}, {{mid5}}

In 2017 these were changed to only be a <noinclude> tag, I assume with the intent of making them do nothing since the topX templates now handle column-splitting themselves, but in practice what the midX templates now do is split the <ul> tag where they're called, so with {{top3}} you normally get:

  • a
  • b
  • c
  • d
  • e
  • f
  • g
  • h

vs. with {{mid3}} after "c":

  • a
  • b
  • c
  • d
  • e
  • f
  • g
  • h

You can see an example in practice at this revision of farthing#Derived terms. The upshot is that (other than on mobile) the list ends up looking like it's nonsensically ordered. I propose running a bot job to scrub these templates from entries—it looks like they're linked a few thousand times apiece, so it shouldn't be overwhelming—and then deleting them. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 20:42, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Delete, not only redundant, but also actively disrupting the layout of entries. I'd almost suggest that this could be done right away; @Benwing2 perhaps? This, that and the other (talk) 00:06, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Delete; I agree, and we should also remove {{der-mid*}}, {{des-mid}}, {{desc-mid}}, {{hyp-mid*}} and {{rel-mid*}} (along with {{trans-mid}} once the new versions have been pushed; @This, that and the other any reason they haven't been pushed yet?). I also don't think we need to wait a month to do this; maybe a week at most. Benwing2 (talk) 02:38, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 it needs someone with interface-admin rights to make the necessary changes to the translation adder gadget. I had been waiting on Ruakh but their activity on this wiki is sporadic. Perhaps Fytcha, Erutuon could help implement the steps at the relevant section of Wiktionary:Grease_pit/2022/August (which I can't link to directly due to the template syntax in the section header). @This, that and the other As an experiment I tried eliminating {{mid4}}. Since some pages seem to rely on the blank-line behavior of {{mid4}} I did this carefully and only changed pages where it seemed fairly safe to do so (e.g. the line before or after begins with a *, : or # or the {{mid4}} occurs adjacent to {{top*}} or {{bottom}}). This biggest set of remaining pages are those using {{hu-verbpref}}, which makes use of {{mid4}} in a complicated way. The few other pages still using {{mid4}} are mostly junk, e.g. Wiktionary:Easter Competition 2009 and User:KYPark/ㄱ. Can you take a look at {{hu-verbpref}} and see if we can just remove the {{mid4}} usages? Thanks! Benwing2 (talk) 05:26, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@This, that and the other Bot is running to remove {{mid3}} as well, and again there are some left-over cases. Benwing2 (talk) 09:22, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 no worries, I will look. Thanks for making a start on this! This, that and the other (talk) 09:00, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@This, that and the other Thank you. I have also done {{mid5}} and am working on {{mid2}}. Benwing2 (talk) 09:11, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@This, that and the other Bot is running to remove {{mid2}}; it will be done in a couple of hours (but again there are some leftovers ...). Benwing2 (talk) 09:41, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2 the use of the mid template in {{hu-verbpref}} is just cosmetic. I'll get rid of it. This, that and the other (talk) 09:56, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@This, that and the other I think I've gotten rid of all the references to {{mid*}} (also {{mid}}), but please review and delete. Bot is running to remove {{der-mid*}} now. Benwing2 (talk) 20:21, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've deleted {{mid5}} initially, and will continue with the others later. This, that and the other (talk) 23:40, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

All deleted now. A separate RFDO is open for {{trans-mid}}, see #Template:trans-mid. This, that and the other (talk) 12:57, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
