First attested as tunuwerde around 819-825. Borrowed from West Frisian Ternaard. Originally a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian werd (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). The toponym was gradually reinterpreted to a compound of an inflected form of te (“at”) and aard (“farmland”).
