This page may contain statements that are annoying, outdated, or just plain wrong. Hence the title.
The purpose of Wiktionary is to create an open, free dictionary of all words in all languages. The website is not the product; the product is the data that can be used in any format by anyone for any purpose. A dictionary, like any large reference work, goes through a series of stages of content gathering, organization and presentation. Wiktionary differs from conventional dictionaries (including many online ones) in that all entries are in a constant state of evolution. Fortunately, because we are an open and free dictionary, we do not need to bother with those aspects of presentation that would interfere in the preparation of the product. The fine points of presentation can be dealt with by downstream users like Google, who will come to their own conclusions in any case. If we take care of the content, the distribution and presentation will take care of itself.
