- The term is derived from Maori but it is commonly used in northern Europe to talk about words used by hunters, fishermen etc to talk about things which have taboo names. Like the island of Eigg for some reason was taboo amongst Gaelic speaking fishermen, so the term "Eilean nam Ban Móra" (The Island of Big Women) was used instead.
