Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.

Just FYI, removing talk page messages from others ...

... is really not a good idea unless you're archiving them on a periodic basis; it comes across as simultaneously rude and as if you're trying to hide something. Some users have actually been blocked for this behavior. Benwing2 (talk) 10:31, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Most people here are rude, why can’t I edit my own talk page? Blueskies006 (talk) 16:55, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Talk pages are supposed to be records of conversations, and deleting the discussions that you didn't like is antithetical to that principle and makes it look like you're trying to hide the conversation. For similar reasons it's strongly discouraged to edit other people's comments on shared discussion pages like WT:Beer parlour and WT:Grease pit (even just to fix spelling and grammatical mistakes). Ok I see, thank you. But I still don’t like the holier-than-thou attitude many editors have. Not like they don’t make mistakes either. They make me look like I have no clue what I’m doing and I don’t want people seeing that on my page. Blueskies006 (talk) 00:24, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

tr-IPA

Hello. I've seen your edit on penaltı wherein you replaced {{tr-IPA}} with regular {{IPA}} saying that the former doesn't account for phonemic pronunciations and "other things", but the template can indeed display phonemic pronunciations, albeit manually given (which is no different from regular {{IPA}}) and I'm curious to know what those "other things" you referred to are, so that we may improve the module further. Thanks! Trimpulot (talk) 05:31, 5 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

My bad, I meant to say it doesn’t provide phonetic transcription (bracket notation). Phonemic transcription (slash notation) is technically not pronunciation-it’s the perceived units of sound that provide the basis for morphology. Any IPA guide to pronunciation should include phonetic notation at the very least. And there are still disagreements between editors on what the phones actually are (aspiration, distribution of , allophones of /a/ and /n/, and many more). Some important mistakes in the module include the use of two primary stress marks in one-word entries, the lack of /ɫ/ (which is phonemically distinct from /l/), the inclusion of stress in 1-syllable words (which is not possible), and the labeling of long-vowel allomorphs of certain words as being found only in the accusative (which appear before any suffix beginning with a vowel (except proper nouns)). And as a general note, the acccusative doesn’t need to be labeled as “definite”-all Turkish cases are definite unless indicated otherwise (i.e. definite is unmarked, indefinite is marked). In short, with the amount of info you have to add to Turkish orthography to make it fully phonemic, you might as well just write out the IPA. This module has a long way to go and should not be used in its current form. (Blueskies006 (talk) 05:45, 5 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think you may be mistaken with the old version of the module. The current one does have phonemic ɫ and does not use more than one stress mark unless manually added. As for the stress on monosyllabic words, that is to distinguish them from actually unstressed words such as mi or de (for which the parameter |ns=1 should be used). The accusative thing is just a conventional way to display vowel lengthening in some forms, but that can be changed (as a side note, the definite in definite accusative is used because an indefinite object does not use the accusative ending, although I know it's more complicated than that). I disagree with you in saying that you might as well just write the IPA since those special characters aren't easily accessible and for most words the phonemic transcription can be easily guessed by the module without trouble. If you want more info you can read Template:tr-IPA/documentation for how I've handled transcribing words by combining pre-reform conventions (ie. the usage of circumflexes) and pseudo-IPA characters (ie. apostrophe for stress and colon for vowel length in some contexts) to make a module that can guess the correct phonemic transcription of most words while using a familiarish respelling. And since, as you said, there is much disagreement on how phonetic pronunciations should be, I've left those to be inserted manually.
