Welcome Message

Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

P.S. Can you specify what languages you know? --Apisite (talk) 02:09, 18 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

If you understand any Chinese topolects, like Min Bei or Puxian Min or others, then your user-page may say so.
(Besides, I have no idea how to use this website on account of insufficient comprehension of written Chinese.) --Apisite (talk) 06:36, 18 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Spoken Shanghainese I guess... that website looks like a great resource for Chinese characters. Shen233 (talk) 15:03, 18 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for making the entries better

Various chemistry terms

Hello Shen, I noticed you'd edited the entries at 幾何異性, 幾何異性体, シス-トランス異性, and シス-トランス異性体. You'd originally had these as essentially all alternative forms of each other, but that was incorrect: these are four distinct terms, with distinct derivations, pronunciations, and meanings. (Alt forms should share the same etymology, pronunciation, and meaning as the lemma form.) I've reworked all four. Please have a look.

Thanks for the cleanup! Shen233 (talk) 19:46, 29 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

金魚すくい, まゆ毛: The following entry is uncreated ( )

You need to add 金魚すくい and まゆ毛 to {{ja-kanjitab|alt=}} of the target entries. —Suzukaze-c (talk) 19:53, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Category:Japanese compound words

I do not know Japanese and so I may be mistaken, but it seems like you are misusing the {{compound}} template. For instance, how can verbs like 耳を貸す be a compound? It’s definitely sum of parts. Thanks. ·~ dictátor·mundꟾ 12:23, 5 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's "sum of parts" while at the same time idiomatic, you can tell when dictionary have these entries, https://kotobank.jp/word/%E8%80%B3%E3%82%92%E8%B2%B8%E3%81%99-639642#:~:text=%E3%81%BF%E3%81%BF%E3%80%90%E8%80%B3%E3%80%91%20%E3%82%92%20%E8%B2%B8(,%E3%81%AE%E7%9B%B8%E8%AB%87%E3%81%AB%E3%81%AE%E3%82%8B%E3%80%82.Shen233 (talk) 15:59, 5 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was talking about the etymology section… You can just simply state the literal meaning of the term if the term is not a compound word. Pinging @Suzukaze-c for more input. ·~ dictátor·mundꟾ 17:31, 5 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Some Wuu profanity entries

I've recently added 娘戲屄 and 娘希匹, two known Wuu profanity into English Wiktionary. As I don't understand Wuu pronunciation, can you help with filling in the proper Wuu pronunciation of these two entries? Many thanks.

I would love to contribute but I'm not familiar with this term specifically and I'm not familiar with how Wuu pronunciation works. Sorry!Shen233 (talk) 20:10, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
