HI TOday I used this in a sentence. It is the word "legacy". I think I used it incorrectly but can I get opinions?

A friend said her great uncle died. She explained how he had a huge family...many grandchildren and even great grandchildren. I said "He left quite a legacy" thinking it meant the kids and his love were the legacy. How much he loved them was the legacy. But now I am not sure and hope I didn't inadvertently insult her (by suggesting it was inheiritance etc) What do you think. Should I apologize? Thanks
