Hi Yann,

I see you're using the templates for language names in translations. This is generally considered to be a bad idea for a few reasons:

  • It makes translation tables very hard to edit when language names are very different in English from their template (eg, "es" for Spanish).
  • In order to avoid load on the server, common language names are not wikified - this means languages that are similar to the name of the country (such as French and German); only dialects, artificial languages, etc are wikified. Some of the templates wikify the language names against this policy.
  • In the Karelian translation of "Karelian", for example, the word "Karelian" is wikified when it should not be (because we are already on the page for "Karelian").

While typing out languages longhand involves a bit more work, it doesn't have these other drawbacks.

Hi again Yann,
Yes, I realise that other Wiktionaries have the policy, but on the English Wiktionary, we prefer not to use them for the reasons I have given above. You are free to use them if you wish, but I would ask you not to as it tends makes more work for fellow Wiktionarians. Thanks — Paul G 17:50, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)
well, I think its a silly policy. How we do translation is an issue we should surrender to the will of Wiktionary in general, for reasons that are fairly obvious. And it seems the other Wiktionary's are using templates.
I agree about wikifying language names, thats unnecessary. And yet one more reason to use templates (I don't follow how this is a drawback for templates), such things can be regulated easily.--Eean 23:58, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)
