Ultimately uncertain; possibly from Turkic uz ( “ genuine ” ) + Sogdian ( /bek/ , “ master ” ) (for the second element, see Turkish bey ). The suffix is known to be from Classical Persian ـِستان ( istān , “ stan ” ) .
