Etymology
Potentially attested as wastrode in 1139, attested with certainty as vaesrode in 1230. Derived from a compound of Latin vastum (“wasteland”) and rode (“land cleared of trees”). The popular interpretation of the first element as a derivation from the name of Saint Servatius of Tongeren is incorrect.
