This part of Karelia has historically belonged to Novgorod and later Russia since the 15th century, and was for a long time governed from the city of Archangel, which was in Finnish known as Viena or later Vienankaupunki, hence this region came to be known as Vienan Karjala (“Archangel's Karelia”).
